About the Ipksa - Croisiere sur la Seine

FISLY ( The Federation of International Sand and Land Yachting ) www.fisly.org is the internationally recognised world governing body for all sand & land yachting as well as kite buggy and land board since it was formed in 1962 .Ireland is a full member of FISLY since the late 70's and the Irish Power Kite and Sandyacht Association ( IPKSA ) is the internationally recognised Irish Governing body for these sports. IPKSA initially started out as The Irish Federation of Land and Sandyacht Clubs in the late 70's and Ireland was host to the European Championships in 1985 which was held in Newcastle Co.Down

In Sept 2000 the Irish Federation of Land and Sandyacht Clubs passed the mantle on to the Irish Power Kite Association ( IPKA ) who once again hosted a European Championship in Ireland, this time the class 8 European Championships on Benone beach in 2005 .IPKA changed its name to the Irish Power Kite and Sandyacht Association ( IPKSA ) in 2007 yrs ago !So Irelands pedigree within the International Land based Windsports community goes back many years and some of the original members from the Irish Fed are still active members of IPKSA.
The many years of International competitions and working with local authorities and organisations has brought a wealth of experience to the IPKSA members.IPKSA is the a members association and represents its members locally and at International levels. IPKSA aims to assist in promoting safe practice of land based windsports and representing its members with local authorities and national organisations in an officially recognised capacity.

Primarily IPKSA is about like minded people pooling their knowledge and resourcefulness to participate in and promote Power Kiting, Kite Buggying and Sandyachting in a safe family friendly and social environment which respects the needs and requirements of its members and other beach users. The IPKSA also frequently arrange for beach litter picks and offer our many years of expertise to local authorities when required to do so. Working together with County Councils and local authorities throughout Ireland North and South the IPKSA organises frequent beach events which attract a considerable following and bring a welcome boost to the sporting community and economies of the event area.
See you on the beach !

Landboarding

Like kite buggying, kite landboarding also involves being pulled by a traction kite, but instead of sitting in a three wheeled buggy you stand on a 'mountainboard' with your feet strapped in (similar to a snowboard). The sport is totally different to kite buggying, being almost entirely oriented towards freestyle tricks.

› The history

This sport has experienced a growth spurt in the past 3 years and probably grown more than buggying both in numbers and development as a sport in the past 3 years tricks.

› The techniques

Kite landboarding begins with the basic static flying skills, then moves on to pulling you along on the board. once you mastered going along you need to learn the art of stopping! this is either bringing the kite to the top of the window, slowing down and turning up wind, or powersliding.

Once you are happy with the basics then you can move into the tricks. toeside (facing away from the kite), then basic jumps, followed by grabs, rotations, foot outs and board offs, all in the air. this sport is still growing, taking inspiration from surfing, kite surfing, snowboarding, skateboarding and mixing it all up with a little originality and a lot of air.

› The equipment

The equipment is being developed all the time, and each year brings more innovation or improvement. mountainboards from mbs, scrub, kheo, ground industries are most common, though kite specific mountainboards are now being developed by kitedeck, design-extreme and flexifoil. examples of popular boards are the mbs comp 6 and the scrub pro.

Kites are mainly depowerable kites flown on a bar, like the flexifoil sabre, ozone frenzy, hq montana, and the peter lynn range (phantom, guerilla ii, venom ii). some kiters are still using fixed bridle kites.

Sandyachting

If anyone involved in sandyachting mentions Kerry, they're not talking about a person - they're talking about a place ... & that place is in Ireland, bottom left hand corner thereof. it's a place that's as near to sandyachting paradise as can be found on this earth, which might be a bit of a sweeping statement but ...
Well, i suppose it depends on what you're used to ! Click here to read more about this adventure
What is different about the standart landyacht class? answer : They are not different they are the same ! this is not a riddle it is totally logical; the concept of the standart class was that there should be a 'one design yacht' where all pilots had the opportunity to sail on equal terms.

Standart yachts are manufactured (by seagull landyachts in france) to a strict specification and individual yachts are scrutinised prior to the races to see that they conform to the agreed specification.
The benefits of an 'international one design yacht' are that pilots of standarts race on equal terms with other pilots; no-one will arrive at a competition with a newly designed sail capable of beating all other competitors! so those engineers and designers who excel in designing faster lighter weight yachts in the other classes do not have an advantage here. Nor do those who constantly buy the latest equipment force others to continually play catch-up as they dig deeper into their pockets. alan watson the ipksa chairperson was 6th in
The european championships in 2007, with a yacht which was 7 years old, another two Ipksa members Colman Billings and Tom Leonard also did well in the event, something that would have been virtually impossible in any of the other classes which make continual advancements in the design of yachts.

The yacht design is controlled by the members of the international standart sandyachting association the class association to which all standart pilots are entitled to join, so control of the class remains in the hands of the majority of the pilots.

There are two main options when sourcing standarts. Present pilots may be a source for second-hand yachts as some pilots may wish to trade up to a newer model. As the class has been much more popular in france and belgium there are more second-hand yachts available there; the sand yacht club at de panne is usually a good starting point. For new yachts contact seagull direct in france. visit their website seagull landyachts

› Bretteville

Well done to the 5 member ipksa team
who represented ireland in the class
promo european cup in may 2007.
Tom Leonard, David and Richard Meeke and
Stephen and Alan Watson.

The 3 day event was held in bretteville surey in normandy france.

There was an entry of 76 in what is an extremely competitive class and this was their first time sailing these type of sandyachts (they were lent to them to encourage their participation). They competed against not only other european countries but a number of south american countries like, Argentina, Brazil and Chile too !

Anyway, Alan Watson was 18th after 17 french pilots - leaving ireland second country home - the other irish pilots getting 41st, 51st, 45th and 64th.

sandyachting takes place on the Louth and Meath beaches over the winter months. If anyone wants info they should contact Alan in person.

> Mini Yachts

The inexpensive mini-yacht is the perfect introduction to land sailing. pack it into the boot of your car, find a suitable sailing site and have some fun. The characteristics of a 'mini' make it an ideal first yacht, but it will put a smile on the face of more experienced hands too. just about anybody can learn to sail it and it is perfect for outdoor family-sport. the mini is simply constructed. a frame supports three wheels, a seat and a mast. the sail is fixed to a sectional mast (for easy packing), the boom controlled by a simple rope and pulley system. steering is performed with the feet. with a minimum of parts and simple construction, the craft is designed to provide a lifetime of land sailing pleasure with quick and easy maintenance.

Miniyachts are purely for fun & those interested in the competitive side of the sport should consider the larger class 5 & 3 landyachts that are regularly raced at the established clubs around the country. minis are raced at clubs where a fleet of identical minis are available, & informal mixed-mini racing is inevitably hilarious as cheating is usually actively encouraged.

in summary the mini-yacht is planted firmly on the recreational, non-competitive side of land sailing. definitely not to be taken seriously unless you are serious about having fun.

Buggying

A kite buggy is a light, purpose-built vehicle powered by a traction kite (power kite). It is single-seated and has one steerable front wheel and two fixed rear wheels. The driver sits in the seat located in the middle of the vehicle and accelerates and slows down by applying steering manoeuvres in coordination with flying manoeuvres of the kite. This activity is called kite buggying. protective clothing, including a safety helmet, is commonly worn as the speed achieved in kite buggies by skilled drivers warrants the need and recommended for all users.
The invention of the kite buggy is generally attributed to peter lynn of new zealand. he built and used the first kite buggies in the early 1990s.

Kite buggying is similar to land yachting, windsurfing or even yachting, and therefore much of its terminology and technique has been adopted from these activities. Kite buggies are classified as "class 8 land yachts " by fisly (the international land and sandyachting federation) and kite buggying competitions are often based on established land yachting guidelines.
